Statement of Purpose

We, as military veterans, do hereby affirm our greater responsibility to serve the cause of world peace. To this end we will work, with others both nationally and internationally.

To increase public awareness of the causes and costs of war.

To restrain our governments from intervening, overtly and covertly, in the internal affairs of other nations.

To end the arms race and to reduce and eventually eliminate nuclear weapons.

To seek justice for veterans and victims of war.

To abolish war as an instrument of national policy.

To achieve these goals, members of Veterans For Peace pledge to use non-violent means and to maintain an organization that is both democratic and open with the understanding that all members are trusted to act in the best interests of the group for the larger purpose of world peace.

Veterans For Peace Statement on Ukraine

Veterans For Peace (VFP) unequivocally condemns Russia's horrific invasion of Ukraine. VFP opposes western militarism and increased US military spending, and we are deeply concerned about even the possibility of nuclear warfare

Veterans For Peace maintains that:

That the people of Ukraine have the right to self determination and to lead their own struggle for national liberation.
That all people deserve to live without military invasions, occupation or threats of war, including the militarization of Russia's borders by the U.S. and NATO.
All parties to the Russia-Ukraine War should commit to genuine diplomacy with serious negotiations.
War resisters from every nation deserve support and safe refuge.

Veterans For Peace has consistently advocated for an end to war and as U.S. veterans to "restrain our government from intervening, overtly and covertly, in the internal affairs of other nations". (See our past Position Statements)

As veterans who know the enormous costs of wars, Veterans For Peace will continue to advocate for: (a) reduction of global arms sales, (b) limiting the expansion of US militarism globally, and (c) nuclear disarmament.

In the month between March 16 and April 16, 2021, at least 45 mass shootings have occurred in the United States, according to CNN reporting, and an analysis of data from the Gun Violence Archive, local media reports and police reports. (Above graphic from CNN)

Given the most recent news on yet another school shooting, this year Memorial Day seemed even more poignant. As veterans we know the legacy and culture of violence U.S. militarism wreaks on our society.  Peace at Home, Peace Abroad is more than a slogan, but rather a commitment to tirelessly work against the violence in our society that holds weapons of war in higher priority than the safety of our children and children around the globe.

From the VFP Website: End U.S. Complicity in Saudi Arabia’s War and Blockade on Yemen

We now have a historic opportunity to end U.S. complicity in the devastation of Yemen. A bipartisan Yemen War Powers Resolution (H.J.Res. 87) has been introduced in the House!

We must use this momentum to withdraw all U.S. military support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen.
With critical assistance from the United States, the Saudi-led coalition’s war and blockade in Yemen have helped create the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, pushing more than 16 million people to the brink of famine.

Momentum for peace is building, but passage of this resolution is not guaranteed. Your voice is needed: Urge your members of Congress to cosponsor and vote for the Yemen War Powers Resolution.

From the VFP Website: Truth in Recruiting

Today, less than 0.5% of the U.S. population serves in the armed forces, compared with more than 12% during World War II. Very often, the public's perception of the military lifestyle is limited to what they’ve seen on the news, TV, or video games.

Recruiters are salespeople, plain and simple. They undergo extensive sales training and are judged by their superiors primarily upon the number of recruits they sign up. Sign up large numbers, and they’re judged to be a good recruiter. Fail to sign up the minimum number assigned (known as "making mission"), and a recruiter is looking at a dead-end career. This policy pressures some recruiters to adopt unethical practices in order to "make mission."

As veterans we know the truth of what happens in war and VFP members across the U.S work with young people before they enlist, to help them understand what it’s really like to be part of the U.S. military.

From the VFP Website: Veterans For Peace Memorial Day Statement

Veterans For Peace is a group of military veterans, family members and friends who are joined in association by our pledge to serve the cause of world peace and abolish war. We bring a different message to Memorial Day than the themes usually promoted by popular media, the government and traditional veterans’ organizations.

We do not seek to glorify either warriors or war. Rather, Veterans For Peace seeks to educate the public about the folly of war and the human, economic, civil rights and liberties and environmental cost of war. VFP members march in parades, lay wreaths, give talks and speeches, recite poetry and vigil to honor U.S. service members who died in and as a result of war, as well as all the civilian victims of war.
